Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

My Dad and Stepmother live in Kuala Lumpur, so the city became somewhat of a home away from home for Alan and me. During our trip, we stopped there three times for a little R&R in-between our hectic travel schedule. For us, Malaysia became our place to take a breath and prepare for the next leg of our journey.

One of Alan and I's favourite thing to do when in KL (or pretty much anywhere) is to eat. The local Pavilion shopping centre is home to our favourite Dim Sum spot, Dragon-i (the table contents of which is pictured above), and in the evening we usually visited Jalan Alor. The cheap dining street is adorned with Chinese lanterns and thronged with tourists and locals alike.

Chinatown and Central Market are a must for tourists looking for Asia’s infamous designer knock offs. The atmosphere and abundance of goods on display alone is worth checking out. Although, my extremely limited luggage space, plus an equally limited budget, sadly hindered any shopping escapades.

To witness total panoramic views of lovely KL, you must visit the Petronas Towers. As the tallest twin towers in the world, the hourly tours to the observation deck offer amazing views of the city skyline. The more daring tourist should check out The Helipad Bar, an open air bar on a working helipad, open from 6pm with a happy hour until 9.

I like to think of Kuala Lumpur as the best of both worlds, with its five star hotels, renowned designer shopping and breath-taking rooftop bars mixed with delicious street food, busy markets and local culture, the city's vibrant energy ensure there is something for everyone.

How We Did It

Planning the trip of a lifetime is obviously very exciting, but it's not without its challenges. The epitome of 'first world problems' has got to be the God awful task of narrowing down the cities you're going to visit while globetrotting. In the end, we decided on a understated 20 countries to complete our tour. Our route looked something like this:

Ireland - Malaysia - Australia - New Zealand - Chile - Peru - Brazil - USA - Mexico - Canada - UAE - South Africa - Hong Kong - India - Japan - China - Malaysia - Thailand - Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia - Malaysia - USA - Ireland

We purposely reduced our European section to just a short layover in London while flying from New York to Dubai. We can do Europe anytime and would rather use those flights for other parts of the world. Plus, inter-railing is definitely next on my list.

A great place to start planning a trip like this, or just for fun, is OneWorld.com. There, you can choose the three, four or six continent package. Obviously these packages may not be realistic for everyone, but the important thing to remember is there are a million ways to travel, this is just the way we did it. Thanks to an unbelievable 18th birthday present from my Dad, Alan and I were lucky enough to avail of the six continent package which includes 16 flights. Naturally, we included the long haul flights within the package and covered the shorter flights ourselves.

It's so fun to plan your itinerary but once you've decided on your top picks, get ready to narrow them down. When planning your dream trip, it's easy to forget about the many inconvenient layovers needed to travel on such a large scale, which will all be included in your flight package.

After you've perfected your round-the-world itinerary, the tricky part comes. I struggled with the next stage of the route planner which consists of settling on flight times, and making sure your route is in accordance with the One World Explorer guidelines

We were already flying to Australia for Christmas before we decided to go for the round-the-world trip so technically, our One World ticket didn't start until we flew from Australia to New Zealand. Because of that, if I wanted a travel agent's help I needed to find one in Melbourne. Thankfully, I got in touch with an amazing women named Melanie from Hello World who helped us immeasurably.

After many months of back and fourth, our flights were eventually finalised and we moved on to the tricky task of organising visas, vaccinations and insurance, on top of actually planning our trip. As I mentioned before, I'm slightly OCD and so I filed every piece of paperwork we may need into a folder and I scanned all important documents and saved them to Dropbox, just in case. At the beginning, when I had about 12 million sheets of paper, putting everything into the order in which we would need them was helpful.

My organising tendencies got into such a state at this stage of planning that it even rubbed off onto Alan. He put several spreadsheets together for each country we would be visiting with information on the relevant visas, what the weather would be like while we were there and the local currency. Everything you can possibly do before take off will make your life on the road easier.

One last thing most people ask about when thinking of taking a trip like this, is funding. It seems completely unrealistic that two twenty-somethings can afford to get up and travel the world for eight months without working. And it some ways that's true. I can't see how we would have made it work without the help of the One World ticket. BUT, that doesn't mean it was easy. We both moved home, forfeited many nights out, saved like demons, borrowed from our families, took out loans and I sold my car. If you really want to do it - you can. Work, borrow and worry about it later. Whatever you can do, it will be worth it.

Ten Things Nobody Tells You About Travelling The World

1. You Won’t Miss Your Family

One of my biggest concerns before leaving little old Ireland was what I would be missing. We left in November when Christmas fever was well upon us. I thought about the memories my family would be making without me, the 5th birthday of my goddaughter I would be absent for, and the first birthday I would be celebrating away from home. My worrying was a waste of time. With social media it’s so easy to stay in touch with friends and family. I’ve had plenty of Christmases and birthdays in Ireland and I will have a lot more, and honestly my goddaughter loves me more than ever since I returned – bonus!

2. Travel Envy Doesn’t Go Away

We all know that sudden pang of jealousy you get when mindlessly scrolling through Instagram on a dull Monday morning, only to be hit with a picture of your friends on a camel in some desert along with the standard, #TravelLife #Culture #SeeTheWorld. Well I can tell you that “Ugh, what am I doing with my life? I need to travel more!” feeling certainly doesn’t go away, even when you’re actually doing it. Ridiculous, I know.

3. You’ll Be Grand

Lots of people thought I was crazy when I decided to move back in with my parents, sell my car and quit the job I was lucky to land just out of college. Even now, when I’m back in the Emerald Isle, looking for work, stuck in my parent's house without a car to escape, claiming Jobseekers Benefit while simultaneously stressing about the debt I’m up to my eyeballs in – I wouldn’t change a thing.

4. You Will Need Double the Funds

I did a bit of research and calculated what I thought I would need to finance this adventure of mine. Then, to be safe, I secured a bit extra. I mean, this is a once in a life time opportunity and I want to do it right. Maybe that was the wrong mentality to acquire, because about half way through I had to do the embarrassing call home for a loan. YOLO.

5. Layers Are Everything

As someone who over packs for a week to Spain, all I can tell you when packing for a trip that covers multiple climates; is layer. Start with all the basics, focus on neutrals and be realistic. I didn’t bring a hairdryer or straighter and never regretted it.  I forced myself to only pack one pair of heels that I rarely wore, although I was glad I had them when in places like Vegas, and I brought one ‘going out’ dress that I NEVER wore.

6. Mooch, Mooch and Mooch Some More

Some of the best memories we had were when we stayed with friends or family. Tap into every single contact you have around the world and utilize the free accommodation. I was apprehensive about asking a friend of a friend of my Dad if my boyfriend and I could stay with them in South Africa for a week, and it turned out to be the absolute highlight of our trip. I found everyone we stayed with (and there were a lot) to be so welcoming and they always went above and beyond to show us a good time.

7. It’s Okay to Not Do Everything

There was plenty of times when I would beat myself up about not doing enough or not seeing as much as possible. I was completely guilt ridden when I wasted an entire day in New York by being hungover in a post-Paddy’s Day coma. Or that time I lost my first three days in Tokyo because Delhi Belly is no joke. But it’s important to remember that lazy days are fine. It’s impossible to be in full-time tourist mode every day of the week, and that’s okay.

8. Don’t Book All of Your Accommodation Ahead of Time

Everyone does this differently, but before we left I made sure we had the majority of our accommodation booked. The reason being  I’m not comfortable with the idea of landing in a new place and not knowing where you’re going to stay, and that hasn’t really changed. However, looking back we should have only booked to stay for a couple of nights and taken it from there. That way, you have the flexibility to move around if you learn of another great place you want to visit. My experience is while flights fluctuate in price, accommodation usually stays the same, so it won’t affect your budget when paying last minute.

9. Get Organised

One thing I did get right was I got very organised before we left and it really helped to lessen the likelihood of issues down the road. I had a folder that stored copies of every flight, hotel and visa we paid for, as well as details of our insurance policies. Said papers were also scanned and stored in Dropbox along with copies of our passports, driving licences and vaccination logbooks. I also took it a step further and organised the folder by the order in which we would need them. Believe me, at the beginning of the trip when it seemed I had amassed a small forests worth of documentation, it came in handy.

10. It Will Be the Best Thing You Have Ever Done

This seems pretty self explanatory, but just in case nobody told you – it’s worth it!

Around the World and Back Again

It has been almost two years since I last wrote a blog post, in some ways, so much as happened since then, but I also feel like I'm the same place now as I was when I started blogging in 2012.

When I first decided to start 'Bonne Chance' I was really down about having to take a year out from college and felt like I needed a creative outlet to hone my writing. Although, when I returned to do my final year in September of 2014, I found myself in school full-time, working part-time in Pull and Bear and interning with a magazine to boot. Something had to go, it was just way too much, and unfortunately my precious blog that I loved so much fell to the wayside.

Eventually, I left Pull and Bear, moved to Dublin and focused on College and my internship. I soon graduated, my internship turned into a full-time position and it all started to come together.

Which is, of course, why I chose to mix it up by quitting the job I was lucky to land straight out of college, sell my car and take off with the BF to travel the world.

I had always intended on returning to my beloved when I felt I had the time to consistently post and I think that time is now. And so, as I once again find myself with time on my hands, without a job for the first time since I was 18 and fresh off a mammoth eight-month tour around the world. I can't think of a better opportunity to jump back into blogging. I've got more pictures and memories to share than ever before and I can't wait to start reliving those precious moments from the beginning.

So, with a new name, some actual writing experience and a fresh perspective, I start again. I hope you'll come with me.

Just Purchased

I just purchased this navy satin number from Topshop, I love the classic Audrey Hepburn silhouette and I have been scouring the shops for a graduation dress for weeks and I finally found the one. I plan on keeping the accessories to a minimum and some nude heels. I think it will come in handy for the Christmas season too. What do you think?

Checkmate

Today marked my first day back to College after a whole year off and it feels so good to be back. When I first found out I had to take some time off I really thought it was the worst thing that could possibly happen, but now it feels like it was the best thing! I'm so eager to get started again and can't wait to give my final year everything.

Along with being a full-time student, I will be balancing two part-time jobs; my internship with RSVP Magazine as well as continue to work for Pull and Bear at the weekends. It's going to be pretty full-on, and I know I tend to let my blog posts slip when I get busy but I really want to be as consistent as possible. It's going to be a lot but I will be so proud of myself if I can manage to balance it all. At the end of the day, all of this is working towards my end goal of being a fashion journalist so the chaos will be so worth it.

It's starting to get a little cooler these days and I'm enjoying the layering opportunities. I like how the slight edge to this outfit is toned down with a dressy necklace and lady-like handbag. Also, how fab is this background pattern? Love it.

Jump

Jumpsuit: Topshop,Shoes & Belt: Zara, Blazer: H&M,Bag: A-Wear

I know I know, I fell behind AGAIN on my blog posts, will I ever change? At this point it doesn't look like it; you'll just have to accept me for the lazy bi-otch that I am.

Anyway, I've had this jumpsuit for ages and have been dying to get it on the blog. I have gotten countless wears out of it over the summer, the lightweight silk is so comfortable and it can easily transition from day to night.

These are my most recent heel purchase from Zara and I love them. I put them off for some time as I wasn't too keen on the strap of leather at the front. I had wanted lace up heels for a long time and envisioned a complete tie up lace, but after lots of pondering back and forth I chose to look over the small flaw and I'm glad I did.

The last picture is a little odd compared to the others, I just feel my posts can sometimes look so serious and usually my favourite pictures are the in-between shots that look so much more natural.

Shades Of White

I love this jacket, I really love it. I loved it when I saw it online and loved it even more when I found it in-store and I think I'm going to continue to love it for the foreseeable future. It's perfect for the transitional weather we're experiencing at the moment and I can't wait for the layering opportunities in the future.

I have noticed that almost everything I am purchasing lately is some shade of white, not the most practical but I'm enjoying the faze. I know this skort is so completely over-done and everyone is wearing them, it was almost reason enough for me to pass when I saw that it had finally come back in stock online, but in the end I decided to go for it. I don't regret it either because it's such a summer staple and it has so many styling opportunities. I'm excited to wear it dressed down with layers and a pair of converse.

Old Faithful

Tank, Shoes & Bag: Zara, Blazer: Topshop, Pants: River Island

Whenever I'm in a hurry or struggling to find an outfit to wear for a night out, I turn to my old faithful ensemble of leather pants, loose top, blazer, and heels. Not the most fashion forward outfit but everyone needs a failsafe ensemble that they feel good in for the desperate moments of not having anything to wear.  To spice it up a little I added my favourite little white bag.

These shoes are my latest heel purchase from Zara and I have been wearing them at every opportunity since. They're refreshingly comfortable in comparison to my other heels of similar style.

Roar

O U T F I T
Jumper: Pull and Bear, Skirt: River Island, Shoes & Bag: Asos.

It seems that I am determined to begin every blog post with apologies and excuses. I have not posted in what seems like forever but I am steadfast about being more consistent with my updates.

I know this look will be a bit of a divider and not everyone will get it, but it is one of my faves. I picked up this jumper in the Pull and Bear sale, I had ignored it for a long time when suddenly I looked at it with fresh eyes and a styling opportunity arose that I couldn't pass up. I love how the heaviness of the outfit is balanced by the minimalistic shoe. This kind of strappy shoe is all I'm about lately, I love how the continuous cycle of fashion can make you adapt so easily to a style that last year would never have been an option.

This bag is the one that I had previously blogged, and it has been a great addition to my collection. I adore the metallic finish and it is so versatile, definitely a good buy.

You may have noticed that the blog has gotten a bit of a face lift, I never want to stop improving and I felt like it was the right time to up my game a little. I love the finished product and the simplistic nature overall. I especially love my new social icons, I now have an Instagram for the blog so you don't get inundated with pictures of my Goddaughter. I'd love to know what you think of the update.
